Center for Optimization of Petroleum Systems
The Center for Optimization of Petroleum Systems (COPS) focuses on cutting-edge technology development designed to improve product discovery success, maximize resource access, and elevate extraction efficiency for oil and natural gas. By extending the operational life of existing fields while driving down exploration and collection costs, COPS provides vital economic advantages. Crucially, the center ensures all subsurface and field activities are engineered to prevent ecological damage.
Current Research Initiatives
01. Optimization of hydraulic fracturing methodologies
02. Development of advanced drilling fluids utilizing waste activated sludge as an organic base
03. Formulation of novel, environmentally friendly drilling muds
04. Deployment of data analytics and advanced computational systems to optimize resource exploration
Center Leadership
COPS is led by Dr. Boyun Guo of UL Lafayette’s Petroleum Engineering department, who is internationally recognized for his pioneering advancements in both primary and enhanced product recovery methods. The center fosters robust multidisciplinary collaboration, uniting faculty experts from a wide variety of academic departments, with Petroleum Engineering and Geology serving as the primary lead units for core R&D initiatives.
