Harnessing Biological Systems for Energy & Bio-Products

Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocess Systems

Industrial biotechnology applies biological catalysts, such as enzymes, microorganisms, and engineered bioprocesses, to transform renewable agricultural residues, forestry biomass, and waste streams into high-value clean fuels, platform chemicals, bio-adhesives, and advanced materials. By converting biological feedstocks into industrial inputs, biotechnology provides a pathway to lower carbon footprints while creating new value chains for Louisiana's working lands.

Key Pillars & Bioprocess Applications

Biotechnology bridges the gap between agricultural production and chemical manufacturing across three primary frontiers:

01

Bio-Based Fuels & Decarbonized Energy

Converting sugars, lignocellulosic biomass, and organic wastes into ethanol, advanced drop-in biofuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and renewable natural gas.

02

Bio-Based Materials & Bioadhesives

Utilizing plant proteins, lignin, and agricultural byproduct solids (such as soy flour or wastewater residuals) to formulate eco-friendly resins, adhesives, and bioplastics that reduce dependence on petroleum chemistry.

03

Biocatalysis & Fermentation

Replacing high-heat, energy-intensive chemical synthesis with targeted enzymatic reactors and microbial fermentation, yielding specialized organic acids, biochemicals, and soil amendments under mild operating conditions.
